Major Overhaul of the Boiler Feed Pump Turbine (BFPT) at PLN Indonesia Power's Suralaya Generation Business Unit

Sinar Sakti Matra Nusantara (SSMN) has again shown its capability in supporting the reliability of generating equipment, this time through a major overhaul of the Boiler Feed Pump Turbine (BFPT) at PLN Indonesia Power's Suralaya Generation Business Unit. The overhaul covered inspection, repair, fabrication, testing, and balancing across the BFPT's critical components. Every part of the scope was carried out as one integrated programme, with precision, workmanship, and fitness for the equipment's operational needs to the fore.

Comprehensive Inspection & Repair

On this job SSMN carried out a range of repair and inspection work on the principal pump and turbine components of the BFPT. The scope covered:

  • Rebabbitting the journal bearing
  • Repairing the pump thrust pad
  • Repairing the casing cover
  • Repairing the suction cover
  • Inspecting the pump shaft
  • Inspecting the spray water line piping
  • Repairing the BFPT turbine seal strip
  • Inspecting and examining the rotor

To establish the condition and integrity of each component, examination ran through a series of inspection and testing methods: visual inspection & dimensional check, penetrant testing, ultrasonic flaw detection, magnetic particle inspection, hardness measurement, and in-situ replica metallography. Chemical composition analysis was also performed on the rotor and blades, along with deposit/scale testing, to learn more about the state of the material and components after service.

Precision Component Manufacturing

As part of the overhaul, SSMN also fabricated the various pump and turbine components the repair work called for.

The pump components fabricated were:

  • Pump deflector
  • Pressure reducing bushing
  • Balancing bushing
  • Coupling bolts
  • Pressure reducing bushing bolts
  • Ring joint octagonal gasket

On the turbine side, fabrication covered components including:

  • Steam LPGV
  • LPGV disc

Each component was fabricated with its own dimensional requirements and technical characteristics in view, so that it would support assembly and the return of the equipment to service.

Balancing to Safeguard Reliable Operation

Balancing of both pump and turbine formed an important part of the overhaul. Its purpose is to confirm that rotor mass distribution sits within the right condition, which helps minimise vibration and supports steadier operation of the equipment.

By integrating inspection, repair, component manufacturing, testing, and balancing, this BFPT major overhaul reflects the thoroughness of SSMN's approach to critical equipment at generating facilities.
